Falconer Pants
Do you remember the picture on my home page? It’s the Falconer Pants by Helen’s Closet, one of my favorite pant patterns. I’ve only made it once but I love the design and the fit. The pattern comes in 2 views, one cropped barrel legged version and one full length wide version. I have made the barrel legged one before. I’ve not been the biggest fan of barrel legged pants, it can quickly look as if you’re walking around with O-legs. However, the barrel shape of these pants are subtle and elegant. I knew straight away that I would love to make another version.
In my first version, there was a bit of fabric bunching in the back that I wanted to reduce in a next version. I did that in the same way you would move a dart. I marked 2.5 cm on the back crotch curve just below the waistline and connected these points on the other side of the pannel in one point, this created a kind of triangle. Then I folded the drawn lines together, forming a reshaped pattern piece. The sides don’t line up perfectly, but that can easily be smoothed out while cutting. I initially wanted to just remove it from the top of the back, but that impacted the waistline quite a bit, so I ended up doing this method.
Having made this pattern before, I knew what to expect. The instructions are absolutely amazing. The zipper fly instruction is the best I have ever seen and resulted in the best zipper fly I’ve ever sewn. You can really tell a lot of effort went into the instructions and they are there to help you. They give helpful tips, describe clear steps, and make it really clear how to do the next steps. Just like my previous one, I used a denim with some stretch, which is quite light for denim, but has good structure and is very comfortable to wear.
The results are just as I hoped. The alteration in the back worked out perfectly, it now fits like a glove. I think next time, I could look into making some adjustments at the front, it looks like there is some excess fabric there too. I’m no pant fitting expert, so I’m not sure yet how I’ll do that. Anyway, I’m still super pleased. They are comfy, the big side pockets are super practical and I just love how they look. The topstichting is super neat. I made them before so I knew what they would look like, but it’s still nice if they match or even exceed my initial expectations. I also added 2 labels from the Kylie and the Machine 2025 Advent calendar to personalize it even more and I love the detail. Can’t wait to sew another pair! I might try the straight legged version next time. Or shorts, that would be cute too. Plenty of options, I’m excited!
