Pepe Pullover pattern test

Every now and then, luck is on my side. Not very often though, but it happens occasionally. Recently, it was the case when I was applying for a pattern test. For those who don’t know, pattern testing is the process where a pattern designer shares their pattern to a select group to gather feedback about the pattern, fit, instructions, etc. With this feedback, the designer can tweak and perfect their pattern before launching it into the world. I like doing pattern tests, it is a great way to support a designer in their process and I get a fun pattern in return. It really is a win-win for both. I am not the only one who feels like this, because it happens very often that way more people apply to a pattern test than actually needed. In that case the designer makes a selection from all the applications. I apply for pattern tests more often but usually end up not being selected, but this time I got lucky and was selected to take part in the testing process!

The pattern test was hosted by Daniela from Studio Neeela and she was testing the Pepe Pullover. I had seen pictures of it while she was designing it and loved it right away. Pepe is a unisex pullover that features a collar with button placket and kangaroo pouch. There is a sleeveless vest option, and an option to add piping to the sleeves. It has a sporty, outdoorsy look to it which I really like.

One of the fun things about this style of sweaters, is the option to use many kinds of fabrics or colors. One example from Daniela featured a pink pullover with two types of fleece, while another one was entirely color blocked. During the testing phase, Daniella shared snippets from all the testers on Instagram, and every single version was unique and really fun. I opted for a fleece sweater in yellow ochre and off white, with a dark ochre as accent color and copper snaps. I am crazy about this color combination!

A pattern testing project is the same as a regular sewing project, for me at least. I try to pay extra attention to everything in the instruction and whether all of the pattern pieces line up properly, but I go about as I would with any other project.

Studio Neeela includes projector files to the pattern, next to the regular print at home or print at copyshop options. I opted to use the projector files and decided to sew the classic fit with sleeve piping. The design of the pattern made it very easy to cut out everything, there are no tiny pieces or oddly shaped parts that were needed.

The sewing instructions are detailed and take you by the hand. Some parts are more tricky than others, but the instructions are good and after tester feedback, a link to a video tutorial was added to the trickiest part of the instruction. The instructions also clearly state what is needed for which version, and which steps are required for each version. I found everything to be very clear and the layout of the instruction is right up my alley.

I enjoyed the sewing process a lot. Progress is quick and it was really fun seeing the pullover come together. I was working with fleece, which sometimes resulted in lots of layers under my machine. The real hero during this process was my seam jumper! Apart from some bulk, the fleece is easy to handle, which makes the construction go a lot smoother.

I love the outcome! It’s everything I hoped for and even more. The color blocking worked out just as I hoped. The fleece is warm and cosy. The piping is a lovely detail (and I made the piping myself!). The fit is oversized but not too baggy. I just love it. I have been wearing it on repeat ever since I finished it.

This sewing project was a huge success, which at times made me forget I was doing a pattern test. If the pattern came like this if I had bought it, I would have been happy. Still, I wanted to share some thoughts because it might help Daniela in finalizing the pattern or instructions. I shared some feedback on details and suggested a slightly more elaborate instruction for the placket (which more testers mentioned because later a video was added). The testing process was great because occasionally Daniela shared some updates with us, which showed me she really listens to everything the testers have to mention. I loved taking part in this pattern test and would love to test for Daniela again.

In case you missed it, I really love this pattern. If you’re looking this style of pullovers, I highly recommend this pattern. Pepe was released today, so it’s now available for everyone!
